The three things that make the Avanti a good executive aircraft are the same three that make it an unusually capable medical and government platform.

Air ambulance

MedEvac without the lifting and tilting.

A VIP passenger layout converts to a stretcher configuration in under two hours, so the same airframe can do a board meeting on Tuesday and a repatriation on Wednesday. The aircraft is available with either a dedicated aeromedical interior or a quick-change MEDEVAC layout.

Piaggio offers the type with an enlarged cabin door — five inches wider than standard — and a loading ramp system that puts the stretcher at the same height inside the aircraft as outside. Nothing has to be lifted or tilted, which reduces both the workload on the care team and the stress on the patient.

Enlarged door and ramp are a manufacturer option on MedEvac and special-mission configurations. Confirm the fit on the specific aircraft when you brief the mission.

Why the type

It gets closer to the problem.

Most of a medical or humanitarian mission’s elapsed time is spent on the ground at either end. The aircraft that lands nearest wins, and the aircraft that flies above the weather arrives with a patient in better condition.

Field access

974 m to clear fifty feet at maximum weight, and clearance for short or semi-prepared runways. Regional hospitals, island strips and disaster-relief fields are reachable directly rather than via a road transfer from the nearest big airport.

Above the weather

A 41,000 ft ceiling puts the aircraft over most convective weather rather than through it. The cabin sits at 6,600 ft when the aeroplane is at 41,000, and at sea-level pressure up to 24,000 ft — which matters for a patient.

Room to work

A stand-up, round-section cabin means a care team can reach the patient from both sides and actually stand to work. The engines are behind the cabin, so speech and monitor alarms are audible without shouting.

Time-critical

When the payload is measured in hours, not kilos.

The hold takes a cubic metre and 159 kg, and the cabin takes more. Most urgent cargo is small, light and extremely expensive to be late with.
